At the 5 th Annual Convention of the Alabama Consumer Finance Association, in July, 2005, the Board of Directors of ACFA established the ACFA – HELEN BROTHERS MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP to be awarded on an annual basis beginning with the year 2005 and each year thereafter to a qualified applicant who is affiliated with the Alabama Consumer Finance Association as an employee of a Regular or Associate Member company, or is a child, or a grandchild of an employee of a Regular or Associate Member company. The initial scholarship to be awarded was $1,000, subject to revision on an annual basis by the Board of Directors based on funds available from the scholarship fund.
The scholarship is established as a memorial to Helen Brothers, the deceased wife of Glenn Brothers, the first President of ACFA and a Life Time Member of the Association. For in excess of 40 years, Helen was a strong supporter of Glenn and the consumer finance industry. Helen served as Executive Secretary of the Southern Company of Birmingham and in 1998 was awarded the “Most Enthusiast Golfer” by the Executive Women’s Golf Association. Helen was an ambassador for Alabama and the US in her travels all over the world. Helen and Glenn had two daughters – Lea and Angie and were the proud grandparents of five grandchildren.
Type of Scholarship: The initial scholarship is a Non-endowed (annual award) from general available funds of the Association to the scholarship fund. Subsequent awarded scholarships may be Non-endowed, Endowed, or Partially-endowed as funds become available to the Association as determined by the Board of Directors. Contributions to the scholarship fund may be made by an ACFA member or Member Company of ACFA, or an independent interested party in the donor’s name or as a tribute to a friend or relative. However, distributions from the scholarship fund shall be made under the name of the ACFA – Helen Brothers Memorial Scholarship. Member or member company contributions may be made as a one-time payment or over a longer period of time to the scholarship fund.
Recipients of the ACFA – Helen Brothers Memorial Scholarship shall be selected without regard to race, gender, religion, national origin, age or disability. There is no guarantee of award of any scholarship in a given year. The Board of Directors of ACFA reserves the right to modify scholarship criteria at any time. An individual shall be limited to one award of the ACFA – Helen Brothers Memorial Scholarship. Selection for scholarship award shall be by the ACFA-HBMS Selection and Scholarship Awards Committee with approval by the Board of Directors of ACFA, which selection shall be final.
The ACFA-HBMS Selection and Scholarship Awards Committee will begin accepting completed and documented Applications for Scholarship on May 1 st of each year through a June 15th closing date. The Committee shall review Applications for Scholarship, select finalists, and interview as needed from June 15th until the Annual Meeting of the Association in July, at which time the Committee shall make recommendation to the Board of Directors for award of the scholarship. Immediately after the Board Meeting in July of each year, the Board will announce the winner of the scholarship award.
